The North British Distillery Company Project Update

The design, manufacture, installation, and commissioning of a new three tank, two-channel Clean In Place (CIP) system for The North British Distillery Company, which will be used to clean the processing equipment for the production of their famous single grain spirit, is now entering the latter stages of the project. The North British Distillery Company have been producing grain spirit, the base for blended whisky since 1887. The North British Distillery Company was formed by Andrew Usher, William Sanderson and John Crabbie in 1885 but is now owned as a joint venture between Diageo PLC and the Edrington group and between these two companies, The North British Distillery Company’s spirit contributes to the make-up of world renowned whisky brands such as Johnnie Walker and The Famous Grouse.

The design stage of the project was completed by our in-house design team where our process designers, mechanical designers, and CAD engineers were able to specify and select the latest technologies and innovations to ensure this CIP set is the most efficient process solution for The North British Distillery Company.

The two channels will consist of channel A, a single high pressure CIP channel to the mash tuns while also cleaning the green malt tanks and coffey stills. While channel B, a duplex high pressure and high-volume line will clean the pipework within the distillery and the washbacks.

The design has enabled for cleans to be segregated, allowing an operator to call any section of the plant to be cleaned. One of the objectives of this new CIP set for The North British Distillery Company is the move towards more discrete cleans. The benefit of this to our customer is each section of equipment can be cleaned individually achieving a more precise clean.

The design of the CIP module optimised the amount of manufacturing that could take place within our workshop to minimise time spent on-site to reduce risks. Our team of welders and fabricators worked on the manufacture of the CIP system throughout October ahead of it being transported to The North British Distillery Company production facility in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The onsite installation commenced during December 2021 with a team of engineers heading to the site to start the installation phase of the project. The team progressed with the project, installing the pre-fabricated skids and large items of equipment through the roof. The next stage of the project is the mechanical and electrical installation, which will continue in January, moving ever closer to starting the commissioning and optimisation phases of the project.
